Start/stop automatic now in vans

By Vanatic posted Jan 28th 2010 at 11:29 AM

The Sprinter with a start-stop system

An engine that is not running consumes no fuel. Simple right?
The new Sprinter saves fuel and money with the ECO Start means that whenever the vehicle is idling at a standstill, the engine is automatically switched off. The potential savings are considerable: on average the Sprinter ECO Start uses five to eight percent less fuel. In individual cases, and depending on the type of operation and traffic density, drivers have even been able to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. At the same time noise emissions are reduced because the engine is switched off.

New BlueEffiency measures

Newly developed four-cylinder engine (OM 651)

Safety is ensured the electronics: once the vehicle begins to move, the engine is immediately started to maintain servo assistance for the brakes and steering.
If a gear is engaged, the engine will only start if the clutch is depressed fully. The safety logic also checks whether the bonnet is closed, so that nobody can be injured by a sudden engine start.
The system can also be deactivated by a switch in the instrument panel.
Stuart, I hope that answers your question.

Communicative traffic light

By Vanatic posted Jan 22nd 2010 at 1:22 PM

A good idea is a good idea, even if it’s just a concept, and if you’ve ever frustratingly sat at a red light wondering when on Earth it was going to go green, you’ll like this idea.

Traffic light

Traffic light

The Eko Stoplight features a countdown timer around the red light itself, showing exactly just how long you’ll be sitting in your car, and the makers even claim it’s eco-friendly since if you know you’ll be sitting there a while, you can turn your engine off during the wait.

Custom Vans

Sir James and I

By Vanatic posted Jan 21st 2010 at 11:05 AM
Top-class camper vans based on Mercedes-Benz

Fresh from the manufacturer

Fresh from the manufacturer

More than two dozen well-known camper van manufacturers base their top-of-the-range models on a Mercedes-Benz chassis out of preference. Camper vans bearing the Mercedes star mainly originate from the three largest markets in Europe: France, Germany and Italy. In Germany alone, the Mercedes-Benz market share in base vehicles for camper vans has been around ten percent for many years – a sign of both their exclusivity and popularity.
In Germany roughly one third of newly registered camper vans based on Mercedes-Benz chassis are registered in the luxury class above 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. This clearly indicates the high level of customer expectations, to which our body manufacturing partners respond with correspondingly spacious and well-appointed camper vans.

Whether the James Cook Sprinter, the Marco Polo Viano or the numerous camper van models produced by conversion partners – all of them benefit from the extensive comfort and safety features of every Mercedes-Benz. Owing to its high traction, the rear-wheel drive of the Sprinter and Viano is particularly suited to heavy camper vans. It is also a precondition for agile yet easily controllable driving characteristics, safe handling and excellent manoeuvrability.
Standard equipment for all models, as well as chassis, includes the latest-generation Electronic Stability Program (ESP) – Adaptive ESP. In addition to the previous parameters, this now measures the vehicle’s mass and centre of gravity, adapting its control characteristics to different bodies and load situations. All Sprinter and Viano models are fitted with 16-inch wheels as standard, providing space for large, robust disc brakes all-round whose braking performance likewise sets new standards.

Operating safety has always been an attribute of all automobiles made by Mercedes-Benz. Whether with respect to spaciousness, instrumentation or the layout of buttons, switches and control lamps, getting in and driving off without any significant familiarisation process is also the norm in an MB-based camper van. Holidaymakers in particular will appreciate the exemplary stowage concept in the Sprinter and Viano, as it ensures that everything needed is within easy reach but securely stowed. Visibility is also an important factor for camper vans, which often have very voluminous bodies. The exterior mirrors of the Sprinter and Viano, with their large lenses and wide-angle auxiliary lenses, make another significant contribution to driving safety.

Sprinter NGT now with BlueEFFICIENCY badge

By Vanatic posted Jan 19th 2010 at 10:22 AM

Natural-gas-powered Sprinter NGT also sports the BlueEFFICIENCY badge

The NGT Sprinter

The NGT Sprinter

As in the passenger car segment, starting right now Mercedes-Benz Sprinter models which, owing to particularly sustainable technologies, stand for highest efficiency, and thus for improved fuel consumption and consequently reduced emissions, also will carry the BlueEFFICIENCY label.
The efficiency package or the NGT technology in the Sprinter are examples of this. These Sprinter models are identified by the BlueEFFICIENCY badges affixed to the sides in the area of the left and right B-pillars.

Top gaget: Airnergy Charger Harvests Electricity From WiFi Signals

By Vanatic posted Jan 14th 2010 at 7:46 PM

[CES 2010] RCA Airnergy Charger Harvests Electricity From WiFi Signals

This thing is, seriously, the highlight of CES for me (so far) this year. 3D TVs and eBook readers are fine, but there’s nothing amazing about them.

The Airnergy Charger is amazing.

This little box has, inside it, some kind of circuitry that harvests WiFi energy out of the air and converts it into electricity. This has been done before, but the Airnergy is able to harvest electricity with a high enough efficiency to make it practically useful: on the CES floor, they were able to charge a BlackBerry from 30% to full in about 90 minutes, using nothing but ambient WiFi signals as a power source.

The Airnergy has a battery inside it, so you can just carry it around and as long as you’re near some WiFi, it charges itself. Unlike a solar charger, it works at night and you can keep it in your pocket. Of course, proximity to the WiFi source and the number of WiFi sources is important, but at the rate it charges, if you have a home wireless network you could probably just leave anywhere in your house overnight and it would be pretty close to full in the morning.

Here is the really, really unbelievable part: RCA says that the USB charger will be available this summer for $40, and a battery with the WiFi harvesting technology will be available soon after. I mean, all kinds of people are pushing wireless charging, but this would hands down take the cake… It doesn’t need a pad and it’s charging all the time, for free, in just about any urban environment.

Simulating demanding driving situations

Training

Unpredictable behaviour by other road users, stranded vehicles, spilled cargo, freak weather conditions with unexpected snow and hail – these are all hazards which the frequent van driver can expect to encounter sooner or later. That’s why it’s important to prepare yourself – with professional, practical training – so that you can react quickly and correctly. Mercedes-Benz provides safety training courses specially designed for van drivers. Here you will learn how to hone your sense of danger, deal with stressful situations more effectively and speed up your reflex reactions. After all, once you are aware of what you are capable of and know how to harness that potential when it really matters you’ll be far better prepared to handle hazardous situations with consummate ease.

Your local Mercedes-Benz Van dealer will be able to provide you with further information about the driving safety training courses on offer.
