Well, I think its great and about time the automotive manufacturers (of any type of vehicle) jump on the electric vehicle train! Unfortunately, I believe it will still take a few years to get from prototype to a real series production and (at least equally important!) establish the necessary infrastructure of electric charging stations. Furthermore, the batteries are still too expensive. Once the batteries get cheaper or a better and cheaper technology than Lithium-ion is found the hype can’t be stopped. At least that’s what I believe…

I am definitely looking forward to it! :)

..thanks for your comment and now I hope that the automotive manufacturers take the chance for a change..

We need to move away from oil dependence for so many reasons, electric mobility really seems like a logical solution, more I think than the fuel cell.
The technology exists, sure the batteries must get better and cheaper and the infrastructure must be extended, but you’ve got to start somewhere right?

Does anyone know what happening with the Fuel Cell?

I think BMW is quite busy pushing their new electric vehicles:

BMW will probably continue to research their Hydrogen cars, but I believe the main focus is on the planned 1 Coupe with their “ActiveE”.

Daimler, respectively Mercedes-Benz, just launched their new 2010 B-Class F-Cell which will be produced and sold in a small series this year: http://www.distrocar.com/2010-mercedes-benz-b-class-f-cell/

I believe that Daimler seems a little bit more interested in the (still very very expensive) fuel cell technology than the other automotive manufacturers…

What kinda surprised me is that Tata is on the hydrogen wave as well:

Honda is cooking up something as well:

Ah, by the way, here’s a good overview on the fuell cell technology on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_vehicle

Also very interesting is this little overview on hydrogen pilot projects so far: http://www.automotiveworld.com/news/powertrain/80794-hydrogen-highways-the-concept-becoming-reality
