A Very Special Sprinter

When you drive up a Sprinter at a red traffic light, it could happen that the backside of an elephant holds out to you! The zoo Leipzig uses a reconstructed Sprinter to transport animals, apart from elephants!

Besides the animal transporter, the zoo has expanded its vehicle fleet with a utility vehicle and a passenger transport. The new transports have a very peculiar design. The interior of the animal transport is adjusted to the zoo’s requirements. “We worked very close together with Mercedes-Benz concerning the equipment and the construction of the vehicles. Without them we could not manage our daily routine. Especially when it comes to very important tasks these vans make our work much easier”, says zoo director Dr. Jörg Junhold.

Some animal transports were not possible so far, for example because of strong heat. But with the air conditioning system in the Sprinter the tour is much more comfortable and species-appropriate for desert animals as well as for animals of the arctic area. The Sprinter also features a video system. So the driver can control the living load during the tour and make sure that the sensitive passenger are fine.

The Mercedes-Benz dealership Leipzig sponsors the zoo for a few years. Michel Steiskal, sales manager for utility vehicles comments: “The zoo Leipzig has very specific requirements for its vehicles. We are glad that we could realize these high-quality transport and working vehicles for the employees and the animals.”
