Since 1991 vans are built in Ludwigsfelde near Berlin. Until September 2012 half a million vehicles rolled off the assembly line. This is a real milestone in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The anniversary vehicle is a permanent and well known partner for manufacturers and traders:
“The Sprinter is the driving force of our production here in Ludwigsfelde“, says Michael Bauer, CEO and plant manager. “So it is even more suitable that our five hundred thousandth vehicle is a Sprinter. Together we’re looking forward to this anniversary and my greatest thanks go out to all our employees. Every day they give their best and that’s the reason why we can produce such high quality vehicles.
182,000 square metres of production area and about 2,100 employees: The Mercedes-Benz plant Ludwigsfelde is not only the biggest employer of the region but it’s also one of the largest van assembly plants in Germany, besides the Düsseldorf site.
At the beginning of 1991 Ludwigsfelde delivers the first Mercedes-Benz vans of the type LN2. 1994 the Daimler Benz AG took over the plant completely. In July 1996 the Vario was procuced in series in Ludwigsfelde. The market launch of the Vaneo in spring 2002 helped the plant to become one of the biggest employers of the Brandenburg region.
Since 2006 the plants Ludwigsfelde and Düsseldorf produce the current Sprinter models. Mercedes-Benz invested more than 300 million Euro into the whole facility and the building itself. The company achieved a completely new assembly line with an ultra modern automatic production facility.
This is a significant result for the location. Thousands of Sprinter will leave the production halls of Ludwigsfelde in future with a specific aim: making the daily work for the people much easier.
