My first Van, Vintage Vans

My last van?

By VanTastik posted Jun 7th 2010 at 9:31 AM

3 years ago Clare Brookes and Michelle Orton had an unusual business idea. What was that? To provide a funeral in style with their armada of white aircooled VW vans.

Many of you might think of this business idea as somewhat strange. But I am sure that just as many of you think of it as a very good idea.

Honestly, I must admit in times like these, where your dog can visit a hairdresser, or things such as the congestion charge. Why not a funeral in style?

But enough of the talking. Let me present you ‘Hearseby’, the squad of volkswagen funerals.

Electric Van – How time flies 1940!

By Van Master posted Apr 22nd 2010 at 3:26 PM

In 1940 some manufactors started to delevoped a new kind of vehicle focused on driving through the country lanes and busy streets and with the ability to park in a small space between two larger cars.

Here the driver demonstrates the practicalities of the new vehicle as he drives along the busy city streets. The commentator suggests that this vehicle is the answer to petrol rationing. What do you think? Why has it taken the industry or the manufactors such a long time to change!

How to buy a VW Bus – Buyers Guide

By Nick posted Feb 18th 2010 at 8:58 PM

Driving a VW bus is pretty cool, but buying one can be a challenge sometimes just like buying any other type of car. You have to decide what you are exactly looking for, what you are willing to pay and what are your must-haves. Luckily there’s some good literature on this topic, such as the “VW Bus Buyers Guide” by Richard Copping.

And if you are lucky enough to have an iPhone you might even want to have a look at the iPhone app called “VW Bus – The Essential Buyer’s Guide” by Veloce Publishing. It’s stuffed with hints on what to watch out for when buying a VW bus and the dozen of pictures illustrate the author’s hints pretty good. Just watch this testimonial video to see the app in action:

I’ll probably give this app a shot and use when looking out for my next vw bus. And everytime the salesperson is trying to play games with me, I can just pull out the pictures in the app… ;)

So what do you watch out for when buying a VW bus or any other van?

History of alternative drive

By VanTastik posted Feb 17th 2010 at 2:28 PM

Talking about alternative drive I traveled to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart and went to the beginning of green mobility with the L206/L306.

Yesterday I could get a glimpse of a very special version of this unique van in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

This is the all information I could get:

In its quest to find the drive system of the future, Daimler-Benz developed a minibus in 1975 equipped with a spark-ignition engine that ran not on petrol but on hydrogen. The vehicle’s principal benefit was its exceptional emissions characteristics, since the only by-product of the combustion process was steam.
Storage of the fuel in gas form presented a major challenge. The researchers at Daimler-Benz opted for a metal hydride storage unit – a world first that was seen as one of the vehicle’s key technological features: not only did it provide storage for the vehicle’s hydrogen, it also optimised the system.
For during abstraction of the hydrogen, the storage unit absorbed a significant proportion of the engine heat, which in turn was recovered during refuelling at the hydrogen filling station for reuse elsewhere.

Here are a few more pics. Unfortunately I could not catch a pic of the tanks.

I have a few more facts:
4 banger with 2277 cc
max. speed 105 km/h
44 kw at 4800 rpm
range: 100-130 km at 60km/h
As posted before this van is used as a tour-bus of Swedens Metal Band Bullet, but also as a carrier for green energy.

By VanTastik posted Dec 28th 2009 at 3:14 PM

Do we still need AC/DC?

Bullet is a band from Sweden. Their ride from Germany. The Hanomag-Henschel F, a spacebox from the beginning of the 70’s.

By the way, later on this van was one of the 1st hydrid not hybrid driven cars.

But under a different label. It was a Mercedes-Benz L 206 then.

The Transit time line

By Vanatic posted Dec 15th 2009 at 9:17 AM

The Transit Timeline

1965 : Transit starts rolling off the production line. Innovative technology for its time includes printed circuit instrument panel, optional steering lock, side-loading door and seat-belt mounts. These were followed shortly after launch by halogen headlights, tubeless tyres and weight-saving leaf springs. Original power units on offer were: 73bhp 1.7-litre and 85bhp 2.0-litre petrol engines and a 43bhp Perkins 4/99 diesel.

1966 : First long wheelbase Transit offered, Perkins 4/108 replaces 4/99 diesel engine.

1971 : Car-like grille introduced and a new model naming policy that reflects the change to metric. Model numbers now describe the payload in kilograms divided by 10.

1972 : Perkins diesels replaced with Ford’s own high-speed ‘ York ‘ engines, delivering 54 or 61bhp.

1975 : Transit interior gains 100mm more legroom and a longer steering column for improved driving position. The 1.7-litre ‘Essex’ V4 petrol engine is replaced by the more economical 1.6-litre ‘ Kent ‘ engine.

1976 : Transit gets front-wheel disc brakes for the first time, ventilated on the top-weight model, the 190.

1978 : Significant facelift with more streamlined and longer bonnet to accommodate more efficient OHC engines. C3 automatic transmission made available.

1984 : Transit gains Ford’s own Dagenham-built 2.5-litre direct-injection diesel, increasing power over the ‘ York ‘ engines and cutting fuel consumption by 24 per cent.

1986 : All new Ford Transit appears with a Cd factor of 0.37, better than many cars, and a 11 per cent lower CdA, generating 8 per cent fuel savings. This Transit is more flexible and has doors that accept a one-metre pallet, plus bigger windows for better visibility. Load space increased up to 13.5 per cent depending on the model.

1991 : Transit gains a turbocharged diesel for the first time, developed from the 2.5-litre DI engine it is also the first commercial vehicle to have drive-by-wire engine control. Additionally there’s an 85PS and a 97PS petrol engine on offer. Redesigned sub-structure enhances safety and ensures Transit passes the tough 48 km/h crash barrier test whilst retaining a triple seat and its occupants.

1994 : Transit updated with a number of changes to the interior and exterior, including the Ford family oval grille. Interior noise reduced 70 per cent, upgraded safety and security features and more car-like interior. Revised 2.5-litre diesel engine has improved emissions and there is a new 115PS DOHC petrol engine.

2000 : A new millennium and a new Ford Transit featuring front and rear-wheel-drive combinations with north-south or east-west engines on the same platform. 95 per cent commonality between the two variants. World’s biggest one-piece stamping for the Transit’s roof. Three wheelbases, four load lengths and three roof heights. This new Transit was voted International Van of the Year 2001.

2005 : 40 th anniversary and five million Transits produced.
