The Oberaigner 6×6 – a Sprinter for the rough jobs

Mercedes-Benz Oberaigner 6x6

A van with the all-terrain capabilities of a G-Class and the loading capacity of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Allow us to introduce the Oberaigner 6x6.

At full throttle through the quarry

The quarry is still quiet. For now. A few birds twitter, the wind softly rustles through the leaves on the trees growing around the pits. But another sound approaches: The sound of an engine slowly combines with the natural symphony. A diesel. Probably a six cylinder. The sound comes closer. We look curiously around the corner. A Sprinter is driving straight toward us. A cloud of dust arises in its wake as it races toward a puddle at top speed. A few seconds later the seemingly harmless puddle turns out to be a small lake: The radiator grille of the Oberaigner 6×6 briefly plunges into the muddy water. The water comes threateningly close to the Mercedes star…

Off-road action with … the transporter!

The rising water obviously does not worry the driver. He continues to drive at top speed. No wonder: The snorkel mounted on the driver’s side supplies the powerful six cylinder diesel engine with air when the vehicle drives through water. The bull bars plough through the murky water and the underride guard protects the base against sharp stones and rough rocks. The vehicle can handle water up to 650 millimetres deep. Four halogen spotlights mounted on the three-man cabin shine toward the setting sun. The Sprinter has obviously been fully modified for off-road use. The sight of it racing past takes our breath away: Not four, but six mighty 285 BF Goodrich tires plough effortlessly through sand, mud and gravel. The Sprinter easily climbs one of the steep, several-meter high earth hills. The sight brings back memories of the off-road monster, the G 63 AMG 6×6. The Oberaigner 6×6 is a dream for both off-road and van fans! We can hardly wait to look at the off-road up close and hurriedly climbed after it.

With the Oberaigner 6×6 ready for anything

When the vehicle comes to a standstill a short time later there is still enough time to take a closer look and admire the exceptional off-road van with its six wheels. It is unmistakably based on the Sprinter from Mercedes-Benz. The conversion specialist Oberaigner is responsible for all of the off-road modifications. These modifications are extensive: In addition to external changes such as the snorkel, bull bars and underride guard and a broader wheelbase, the Sprinter also features numerous, sophisticated technical enhancements. These include the permanent all-wheel drive and a total of four differential locks along with switchable all-terrain gear translation with a ratio of 2.85. The Oberaigner 6×6 easily handles high obstacles thanks to its 322 millimetres ground clearance below the front axle. Two different wheelbases are also available. With this off-road setup in the long wheelbase, the off-road van is capable of tackling driving slopes of up to 32 degrees. The symmetrical double pendulum suspension on the rear axle represents another technical refinement. This provides the Oberaigner 6×6 with maximum mobility and all-terrain capabilities. The reinforced frame allows an enormous payload of 4 tonnes – the vehicle’s maximum weight amounts to an amazing seven tonnes. The smaller 515 CDI with a four-cylinder diesel engine, 150 hp, a 6-speed manual gearbox and a six cylinder diesel engine with 190 hp and powerful 440 newton meters of torque provide superior driving power. The latter is only available with the 5-speed automatic transmission.

No such thing as impossible

In addition to the flatbed included as a standard feature, the Oberaigner 6×6 can also be fitted with a variety of different bodies for specific applications. One of the most spectacular body variants converts the Oberaigner 6×6 into a fully viable fire service vehicle – the body is produced by Rosenbauer, a body manufacturer specializing in fire service vehicles. The rear section contains a complete set of five service equipment including hoses and space for the necessary tools.

Combined with the off-road features, this creates an exceptionally versatile vehicle capable of operating in regions otherwise inaccessible with conventional fire service vehicles. No doubt: The Oberaigner 6×6 is a true jack of all trades – and further impressive proof of the diversity of the Sprinter from Mercedes-Benz.
