In regions where the mountains are covered in snow all year round there is often a risk of avalanches. Austria’s snowy mountains are no exception. The protective forest is absolutely essential for the safety of the people: It serves as a barrier to the urban areas, preventing avalanches from ever reaching inhabited areas. Since 2010 Mercedes-Benz has worked with the Austrian Alpine Association (OeAV) to reforest the protective forest, plant new trees and help maintain the protection against avalanches. Now four new Vito 116 BlueTEC with permanent 4×4 all-wheel drive can help with this important mission, serving as personnel transport into the Alpine regions. Each of the four Vito provides space for up to 9 people and extensive mountaineering equipment.
As a mountaineering club, the OeAV also promotes various sports such as hiking, skiing and climbing. The Alpine athletes place a major emphasis on developing and implementing concepts to make the sport safe. The protective forest is absolutely essential. That is why Mercedes-Benz supports around 30 mountain forest projects, environmental sites and alpine revitalization projects throughout Austria. The thinning, renovation and clearing of the domestic forests is highly important for the health of the forests. The OeAV also provides the necessary infrastructure with huts, paths and climbing facilities for the various mountain sports and ensures competent advice and information, for example with the alpenvereinaktiv.com route portal.
