Durable, customised and modern. This describes the new Sprinter, which officially commenced production on 15.07.2013. With the Sprinter Classic, Mercedes-Benz and GAZ not only strengthen their international cooperation but also the production facility in Nizhny Novgorod. The companies have been working together since May 2012. One unique aspect of the cooperation: the Sprinter Classic is manufactured and sold directly on location. Daimler AG has invested more than 100 million euros in the production, the product adaptation and also in the sales network. Volker Mornhinweg, the Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, is very satisfied with the cooperation with the Russian manufacturer: “We are convinced that GAZ is the ideal partner for the local production of our Sprinter. As Russia’s largest van manufacturer, GAZ possesses extensive technical expertise along with a good network of local suppliers and, naturally, numerous experienced employees. These are all important elements for our joint success in Russia.” There is a good chance of success on the Russian market as the van segment has developed very positively in the last three years.
Another unique aspect of the partnership is the joint engine production at the GAZ plant in Yaroslavl. The four-cylinder OM 646 diesel engines used in the Sprinter Classic are manufactured here. The objective is to establish the Sprinter Classic in Russia with its ADAPTIVE ESP stability program, included as a standard feature, together with a modern design and a stable platform. In addition, the van’s “line advanced” variant can also be adapted as desired to meet the needs of customers requiring extensive customisation.
