Two Australians and a jumbo Sprinter reinvented the Australian burger – and are highly successful.

Creations for every taste

Australia is world-famous for the fact that you can drive for days without seeing anyone. Which is why Round the Way can make the people here so happy: A truck which travels to where it is needed and brings people the flavors they enjoy: Bagel burgers! Theoretically. Because in practice, the bagel burger van also spends a lot of time on Melbourne’s thronging streets. When it is not at a surfing event or a music festival in the outback or inspiring wedding guests with its striking creations, that is. Three years ago Ryan Slater and Peter Marios came up with the idea for this business. The two restaurateurs were inspired while in New York where baked goods in every imaginable form and variant have been commonplace since the 70s.

Once around the world: the bagel

The origins of the bread treat with the hole in the middle, which is plunged into a warm water bath before baking, are shrouded in legend. One thing is certain: the bagel originates from the Eastern European Stedtl. The “Beigel” or “Beygl” ultimately arrived in the USA during the European immigration waves in the 19th and 20th century. Over the course of the decades it progressed from what was once food for the poor to a popular delicacy.

A jumbo Sprinter as a snake charmer

When searching for a suitable and reliable vehicle for the mobile bagel restaurant, the jumbo Sprinter was the clear choice for both founders. An especially high roof and the extra-long wheelbase provide enough space for the high-performance professional kitchen which was quickly installed. Ultimately, the right equipment is what makes the ten employees truly enjoy the job. Even on days which are as long as the endless queues outside the bagel truck. The concept appeals to many different groups. That is why even after three years there is no sign of boredom in the bagel business, emphasizes Ryan Slater: “Every day we experience so many different people and stories. There is never a dull moment!”

To the point where Round the Way 2012 trundles through Melbourne’s streets and transforms bagels into burgers, the bagel has a long trip around the world behind it.
