A small manufacture in Mildura, in the middle of the Australian Outback, a day’s tour to the north west of Melbourne. Ten employees produce twelve motor homes a year, with skill and passion. People wanting to afford one of the rare Wirraways appreciate top quality materials, luxurious fittings, attention to detail and best handcrafted quality.
Of course, not just any vehicle can be used as the basis for such a tailor-made deluxe travel mate: “Our customers want the best available vehicle”, explains the boss of the company, Robert Tonkin.
We use Mercedes-Benz Sprinter exclusively as the basis for our motor homes.
The family company operates at the high end of the market. “Although our motor homes shouldn’t be too big, we still want all the convenience of our own home when we’re touring,” says Wirraway customer, Judy Greenwood from Adelaide. She particularly loves the warm Tasmanian Myrtle wood that is used for the interior fittings.
Together with her husband, Mike, Judy spends many weeks of the year touring the 5th continent. As soon as the two fit pensioners have found a nice spot, they stop and take out the side panels of their motor home. The electric slide-out solution increases the original compact size of the interior considerably. Space for not only a full size double bed, but a generously sized bathroom, dishwasher and washing machine!
Outside, temperatures can reach 40 degrees and over – but the Greenwoods relax inside, enjoying being able to rely on their solar-operated air-conditioning. And if it happens to break down, Rob Tonkin and his team have integrated an emergency generator.
“We can be out, self-reliant, for six days without having to resupply ourselves with water or electricity,” explains Mike Greenwood proudly. He and Judy are experienced travelers. Both of them are over 70 and they want to travel as much as they can for as long as they can. “Australia is a huge country – we are far from having seen everything,” says Judy.
The Greenwoods love driving inland, experiencing nature and meeting the people who live in the Outback. And they can rely on their Wirraway. Mike: “This is our fourth motor home already – and we’ve finally found the right vehicle! It is pure quality. Nothing breaks down, even when the roads get bad. And because our Wirraway is based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, it’s easy to maneuver, like a normal, well-equipped car.”
People interested in ordering a Wirraway have to plan in a wait. But the company boss, Rob Tonkin, does not want to expand the company, but stay true to his small manufacture. “We love our company just the way it is,” says the former pilot, who, together with his father, turned his hobby into his profession over 20 years ago. “If we got bigger, I’d have to spend more time in the office. Today, my wife, children and I can still go touring ourselves, and enjoy the beauty of the Australian Bush!”
