On your bike – vanlife with Sprinter, racing and mountain bikes.

The Australians Britt and Nathan are former cycling professionals. That's why there's room for two racing bikes and two mountain bikes in their newly converted Sprinter.

Life in the Sprinter – a 180-degree turn.

The life of Britt Steele and her partner Nathan took a 180-degree turn when they discovered their fascination for life in the camper van: “There are just endless possibilities. Everyone who travels in a van has their own story to tell and their own philosophy of life,” the Australian says enthusiastically. After her first trip in the van, at that time still with a temporary bed and little storage space, she and her partner were immediately on full of passion for vanlife. The two former cycling professionals turned their lives upside down: Soon they will give up their apartment in Melbourne, get on the plane, send their Sprinter by ship to Brussels and travel for at least two, maybe three or more years through Europe, Asia and North America. Their motto: “Just keep moving!”

Cycling is the best way to see the world! The people you meet, the places you can ride and the health benefits are incredible.

With perseverance and ambition the conversion succeeds.

The first night in their own Sprinter was a mixed experience for the two Australians: “We were always afraid that someone would suddenly knock.” So it was even nicer to wake up in nature – Britt and Nathan forged plans which other places they would like to explore with the Sprinter. In addition to their jobs, they did the conversion of the van on their own. Nathan took over the technically complex tasks like the installation of the electronics and the solar module. Britt designed the van and assisted him. “Somehow we finally managed to make the vision come true. Even if there were some setbacks. In the end, however, our mistakes helped us to develop unplanned solutions and thus achieve an even better result.”

Britts 5 tips for every beginner on the road bike:

  1. Get out there and give it a go, find a club and start local races.
  2. Find some friends to ride and race with.
  3. Have fun and don’t take it too seriously.
  4. Get consistent with your training, you will improve out of sight!
  5. Adapt the bike to your body – your health will show its appreciation.

Next destination: discover Europe’s cycle paths.

Britt and Nathan were full-time cycling pros for a long time. Whether hiking, skiing, cycling, snowboarding or mountain biking – both are always on the move. Choosing the right van wasn’t easy for them: it had to be spacious enough to stow at least four bikes and other sports equipment. It also had to be high enough for both to stand upright. They chose the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, built in 2013, which they got at an auction in Melbourne. Another bonus: The reliability of the Mercedes-Benz brand and the worldwide service network. This means they don’t have to wait forever for parts even in remote locations. Their great journey to Europe, Asia and North America began at the beginning of 2019. They do not yet have any plans for the period after that. But one thing is certain: their bikes are always with them.

The 4 most beautiful cycle routes in Europe:

  1. Portugal offers beautiful cycling routes, for example along the Serra de Monchique, lined with cork oaks.
  2. For those who are free of vertigo, there are steep trails in the French Grand Canyon du Verdon, not far from the Côte d’Azur.
  3. Those who want to enjoy Bella Italia and Dolce Vita climb the Cilento near Naples. The route around the mountain village of Pisciotta stretches along the green national park with a clear view of the sea.
  4. Bavarian coziness awaits cyclists in Chiemgau and Berchtesgadener Land. Don’t forget your swimming trunks, because Lake Chiemsee invites you to swim.
