Chad Smith has always been a van enthusiast. He grew up with vans in the USA. “We often went camping and were always working on our vans.” Chad loves travelling in his modified Mercedes-Benz Sprinter – driving along endless roads while the sun shines and relaxing music accompanies the journey. “I always travel with my Sprinter. Either I am bringing my boat to some remote river or I load up my Sprinter with equipment so that I can go camping with my family.” But the Sprinter is more than just a vehicle for vacations: Chad also needs his Sprinter for work. That is why he asked how he can combine the two: how can you maximize the functionality of a Sprinter for work, hobbies, transport, travel and family all at once?
“The Oregon Outback. Oregon is often thought of as a very wet and rainy state, but the majority of the State is very dry. The high desert basin and a wide range of the central southern portion of Oregon offer miles of wide open roads, large lakes, huge skies and very few people. There are beautiful fault block mountains emerging from the high desert plateau. Great camping, amazing bird watching, and the stars are unforgettable.”
Chad’s solution was to found the company “Adventure Wagon”. The company originally began as a Sprinter rental service. However, over the course of time Chad began to modify Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and customize them for specific needs. The customers were so enthusiastic that he ultimately decided to specialize Adventure Wagon in this business. Today, Adventure Wagon offers a diverse range of components for Sprinter based around a set of modules that can customize the van for every eventuality. “My customers are all adventurers. I want people to go out into the world where they can do everything they want,” says Chad.
With Adventure Wagon, Chad has created the solution to a problem that he experienced as a child. “In addition to camping, we also used our van for work,” he remembers. Even then, he began building small cabins, storage boxes and suchlike in order to combine the two. Today, Chad can both travel and work with his Sprinter. Just another happy person living the van life? “I am not living a van life. My identity is not based around my van. Instead, I use it to do my own thing – whatever that might be,” explains Chad with a satisfied grin as he starts his Sprinter’s engine and heads out on his next adventure.
