From Vorarlberg to Salzburg with Nägele Logistics
An industrial city with culture
Salzburg’s fans regard it as Austria’s most beautiful city for a good reason. Despite having only a moderate number of inhabitants, the city has an impressive range of cultural offerings and a rich history. The city owes its wealth and its name to the rich salt deposits. Because the white gold formed the foundation for the surrounding industrial area. The transport company Nägele is located only a few kilometers from the city in Puch bei Hallein. It is in the direct vicinity of a range of industrial operations and subsidiaries of renowned major companies. Thanks to the geographical position in the center of Austria, it is the perfect starting point for the transport company and its fleet of trucks, vans and small transport vehicles: “From here you can quickly reach Germany or Italy and that is perfect for us because our jobs take us throughout all of Europe”, explains Wolfgang Nägele.
Since 2002 the family-owned company managed by Wolfgang Nägele has been making a name for itself with various logistics and transport services in Austria. The company has 14 employees, four of these from the immediate family. “We are the ones they call whenever things have to go quickly”, explains Mr. Nägele while he concentrates on the road. “Because we truly are available around the clock. The telephone rings at least three times every night.” That is why Wolfgang Nägele is a rare sight in the company’s offices and warehouses. On this morning the company’s manager has already been on the road for hundreds of kilometers when we begin the interview. “My typical day almost never ends”, says Wolfgang Nägele at the very beginning of our interview, summarizing his working day.
Today is the perfect example: “I received the job of transporting car parts to Vorarlberg at 3 o’clock in the morning.” Now, at just before 10 o’clock in the morning, Mr. Nägele and his white Citan are already on their way back but still 266 kilometers away from Salzburg.
200 empty cups to London
The company transports all sorts of goods, large and small. The small freight is delivered with a 2012 Mercedes-Benz Citan. “That begins with pharmaceuticals and lost house keys up to 200 empty yoghurt pots”, explains Mr. Nägele with an impish smile. “I had to drive these to London because a factory apparently had to bridge a bottleneck with its packaging material.” On this journey Mr. Nägele had more than enough time to convince himself of the Citan’s benefits. “We purchased the vehicle because I always had to hand over my private vehicle for smaller transports”, remembers Mr. Nägele. “Our fleet already had Mercedes-Benz vehicles for larger transports because we really like the vehicles – my private vehicle is now an A-Class. The newer vehicles have extremely economical fuel consumption, convincing comfort and come with outstanding service”, sums up Wolfgang Nägele. “We have not had a single problem with the Citan so far although the vehicle has definitely driven 250,000 km.”
Always on the road
As Wolfgang Nägele passes by Salzburg in his Citan a few hours later he remembers yesterday’s job: “We supplied prospects to more than 70 deliverers in the pedestrian area in Salzburg. The agile Citan wove its way through the narrow streets – the perfect terrain for this agile, light van”, explains Mr. Nägele enthusiastically. What else is on the agenda for Wolfgang Nägele and the Citan today? “No idea”, admits Mr. Nägele and sets the indicator to take the exit 7 kilometers after Salzburg. “First of all I will go to the office now. But this afternoon I might already be on my way to Italy – with us you never really know…”
